Safely charging an e-bike battery

Safely charging an e-bike battery

Some people have recently shied away from the purchase of an e-bike because of news stories about battery e-bike fires. E-bike batteries can be charged safely, if done the right way. Let’s address those fears with facts.

Safety experts warn AGAINST trying to extinguish a battery fire with water. The next best thing to smother an electrical fire is sand. Messy, but still more practical than tons of water.

A better way to put out a class D fire in an electric bike battery, which involves combustible metals, the best method is to use a Class D fire extinguisher. This type of extinguisher is specifically designed for combustible metal fires, such as those involving lithium batteries.

But who has a that kind of fire extinguisher? You might find one at a surplus store, but it could be expensive.

There’s a better solution.

It’s a fireproof bag, specifically designed for the purpose. The average cost is around $20, but that’s for minimum safety. Safety is not a place for a cheap investment.

A charging case is an important accessory for any e-bike owner, equally as important as safety lights and a helmet. Every e-bike owner should have at least one charging battery, and USE it every time you charge the battery.

Even with a charging bag, there are certain precautions to keep in mind:

#1 Never leave a battery to charge overnight.
#2 Never touch a burning li-po or other e-battery. You have no idea how hot a burning metal can be.
#3 If a fire starts, try to remove the power, if you can do so safely
#4 If there is no immediate danger, it’s best to let a battery burn itself out. Then move it to a safe place in case it flares up again.
#5 Inspect your batteries after each ride. check for any cracks, dents or swelling in the battery, especially if you fall off your bike. Any of those three means its time to buy a new battery.
#6 Dispose of a defective e-battery safely. You can soak it for 24 hours in 1 gallon of water mixed with 1 cup of salt, or simply find an authorized disposal location.
#7 Never buy a replacement battery or charger that does not have the UL Certification clearly marked.
